Inoperable Optimism: what does that even mean?
Something that can’t have the intended ending
You are probably asking the same question I’ve been asking, what the heck is Inoperable Optimism. You are most likely reading this because of this. First of all, I didn’t know such a term existed before yesterday. Watching the 2011 movie 50/50, I came across it. The contrast in the constituent words struck me and I just had to find out what that means exactly. Turns out to be what I had in mind, just slightly different.
Inoperable Optimism
The term is made of two words.
Taking each for their individual worth.
Definition of inoperable (Merriam Webster)
1: not treatable or remediable by surgeryan inoperable brain tumor
2: not functioning : INOPERATIVE
Definition of optimism
2: an inclination to put the most favorable construction upon actions and events or to anticipate the best possible outcomeexpressed optimism about the future of the businessthe optimism of cheerleaders
It it suggests that the term means that being optimistic about that which ends in the unintended way even though you see it coming. It’s about being optimistic in trying times which you know you can’t get out of. It ends quite badly. It’s the ultimate optimistic mindset. Belief in the impossible.
Inoperable
Inoperable itself as a term is often used medically to refer to situations that cannot be treated or operated such as could be a case of cancer.
A key lesson
It is common to be in a situation which you know eventually ends badly. Life happens and there’s nothing you can do sometimes. In such situations, employing inoperable optimism would do you a great deal of good. Simply believing in something better than death or disappointment can change your paradigms and give you a fresh and better outlook on life that you never saw coming.
When life gets tough, stay optimistic.
